MLCC Prices Surge 10-20% in Q3 2026: Murata, Samsung, and Yageo Lead the Charge as AI and Automotive Demand Overwhelm Supply
The MLCC (multi-layer ceramic capacitor) market is in the midst of its most significant pricing correction since the 2021 super-cycle, with the three largest global manufacturers — Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Yageo — all announcing or implementing price increases in the 10-20% range during the third quarter of 2026. Unlike the pandemic-era spike driven by work-from-home demand, this cycle is rooted in a structural realignment of manufacturing capacity against surging demand from three parallel mega-trends: artificial intelligence infrastructure, automotive electrification, and industrial automation.
Murata, which commands roughly 35% of the global MLCC market by revenue, led the latest round. Effective July 1, 2026, the Japanese giant raised prices by 10-15% on high-capacitance MLCCs in the 0402 and 0603 form factors with ratings of 10uF and above. These are the workhorse components for smartphone mainboards, server VRMs, and base station power stages. Murata's official communication to customers cited a combination of rising raw material costs (particularly nickel and palladium), increased energy expenses at its Japanese and Philippines manufacturing sites, and capacity being fully allocated for automotive-grade (AEC-Q200) products.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics quickly followed with a similar pricing action, but with a sharper focus on automotive and industrial MLCCs. The Korean manufacturer noted that its automotive MLCC shipments grew over 40% year-over-year in the first half of 2026 alone, driven by tier-1 automotive suppliers locking in capacity for ADAS, battery management systems (BMS), and onboard chargers. A mid-range electric vehicle now contains 8,000-12,000 MLCCs, compared to roughly 3,000-4,000 for a traditional internal combustion engine vehicle. Samsung's price adjustments for AEC-Q200 MLCCs are reportedly in the 12-18% range.
Yageo, the Taiwan-headquartered passive component leader and the third-largest MLCC producer globally, took the most aggressive stance with a 10-20% price hike across its full portfolio. In a letter to distribution partners, Yageo highlighted that LME nickel prices had surged approximately 25% year-over-year, directly impacting the cost of nickel electrode pastes which account for 25-30% of MLCC production cost. Meanwhile, palladium — used in internal electrode pastes for certain high-reliability MLCC grades — has remained above $1,200/oz. Yageo also flagged that its factory utilization rates have been at 95% or higher for five consecutive months, leaving no room to absorb cost increases through efficiency gains.
Beyond raw materials, the demand-side story is dominated by AI data centers. A typical AI server motherboard with GPU accelerators now carries 3,000 to 5,000 MLCCs, compared to 1,000 to 1,500 for a standard enterprise server. The critical difference is specification — AI boards require disproportionately more high-capacitance (>=10uF), low-ESR MLCCs in compact 0402 and 0201 packages to handle the transient current demands of high-power GPUs such as NVIDIA's Blackwell Ultra and B300 series. A single DGX-like AI server node can contain over 20,000 MLCCs when accounting for GPU baseboards, switch boards, and power shelves. Industry estimates suggest AI-related MLCC demand will consume 15-18% of global MLCC output by the end of 2026, up from approximately 5% in 2023.
The supply-side response remains constrained. Murata's new Izumo plant (Shimane Prefecture) and Samsung's Tianjin expansion will add meaningful volume, but neither is expected to reach full production before late 2027. Meanwhile, legacy 200mm-equivalent MLCC production lines — still responsible for a significant share of commodity-class MLCCs — are being gradually retired by Murata and TDK as they pivot to higher-margin automotive and industrial grades. This structural downshift in commodity supply is contributing to a "rolling shortage" phenomenon, where segments like networking, consumer IoT, and white goods — which rely heavily on commodity MLCCs — are seeing the sharpest price increases.
Lead times paint a clear picture of the strain. For selected high-capacitance MLCC models (e.g., 0603 22uF X5R, 0805 47uF X5R, and 1210 100uF X7R), lead times have extended to 16-20 weeks, up from a normal 8-12 weeks. On the spot market, authorized distributors like DigiKey, Mouser, and element14 have begun showing "N/A" stock status for dozens of popular Murata and Samsung GRM-series part numbers. Independent distributors report spot premiums of 15-25% above contract prices for automotive-grade MLCCs, with some hard-to-find AEC-Q200 parts trading at 2x the standard price.
Looking forward, the pricing outlook remains bullish through at least Q1 2027. Murata management has indicated that its Izumo fab will focus exclusively on automotive and industrial MLCCs, while Samsung is prioritizing HDI-capable MLCCs for AI server modules. No major commodity MLCC capacity is being added in the near term. The global MLCC market is projected to reach $18.5 billion in 2026 — a 10-12% increase year-over-year — with volume growth of 6-8% and ASP improvements contributing the remainder. For procurement teams, the key recommendations are to extend contract coverage for high-runner part numbers, qualify second-source alternatives from Walsin, Fenghua, and Holy Stone, and maintain safety stock of 12-16 weeks for critical automotive and high-cap MLCC lines.
